What Is A Space Maintainer?

A space maintainer is a small dental appliance used to hold the space created by one or more missing baby teeth until the permanent teeth grow in. A space maintainer is typically necessary when a baby tooth has been removed or fallen out prematurely.

Types Of Space Maintainers

There are several different types of space maintainers. They can either be fixed (non-removable) or removable.

Space maintainers can be made from metal, acrylic, or a combination of both.

One of the most common space maintainer designs is a simple metallic band with an attached wire.

Does my child need a space maintainer?

Our caring dental team will advise you during your child’s regularly scheduled appointment, if a space maintainer is recommended.

How are fixed space maintainers inserted?

Inserting a fixed space maintainer requires two appointments.

During the first appointment, our helpful team will take impressions of your child’s teeth that will be used to create a custom-made space maintainer.

During the second appointment, our team will attach the space maintainer to your child’s teeth.

Following the appointment, your child will be able to eat and drink normally.

How is a removable space maintainer inserted?

To create a custom-made removable space maintainer, your child will attend two short appointments at our office.

During the first appointment, our experienced team will take impressions of your child’s smile that will be used to create the removable space maintainer.

Once the appliance has been made, a second appointment will be required to fit the space maintainer and adjust the device for fit and comfort.

When should a space maintainer be removed?

It is important to bring your child in for regular check-ups while they have a space maintainer.

During these appointments, our knowledgeable dental team will check the space maintainer and remove it at the correct time to avoid any interference with the arrival of the permanent tooth.
